The entries in TransOrbital's Lunar Time Capsule Project will be micro-etched
onto a nickel metal disk manufactured by
Norsam Technologies. Their
HD-Rosetta archival storage technology uses the same techniques developed
for manufacturing integrated circuits to micro-etch images onto metal disks.
Because the data is stored as images, similar to conventional microfilm or
microfiche, they may be easily read with a microscope - important for long term
archiving since we cannot assume that the reader will know how to interpret complex
encoding schemes such as those used in CD-ROM disks. The Norsam disks are designed
for long-term archival storage and are almost totally impervious to chemicals,
temperature extremes, or radiation.
This picture shows a disk similar to the one that will be used for the
TransOrbital Time Capsule. The metal holder is used for transportation only,
and will not be sent onboard the spacecraft. This particular disk holds the
entire text of Herman Melville's Moby Dick.
